2) Vergil, Bischof, ✝ Salzburg 27. 11. 784; kam als Wandermönch aus Irland; 745 Bischof und Abt in Salzburg sowie Missionar in Kärnten. In die von ihm 767-774 erbaute Salzburger Kathedrale brachte er die Reliquien des heiligen Rupert. U. anderem wegen seiner Lehre von der Kugelgestalt der Erde wurde er von Bonifatius angegriffen. - Heiliger (Tag: 24. 9.; in Gurk und Klagenfurt 24. 11.).
